Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption
📍 San Franscisco
The Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption is the stunning modernist mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. Completed in 1970, this cathedral in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood features a distinctive saddle roof of hyperbolic paraboloids and a 55-foot golden cross atop a 19-story high cupola. Designed by Pietro Belluschi and Pier Luigi Nervi following the Second Vatican Council, the cathedral represents a bold new vision for Catholic sacred architecture.
